How To Lower Your High Cholesterol Levels?

Your doctor might prescribe a statin if your blood test determines that you have a high LDL cholesterol level above 170 mg/DL or total cholesterol level above 240 mg/dL and if diet, life style and exercise change fail or are unlikely to bring your LDL and total cholesterol levels down to an acceptable level. You may need to take a statin drug to lower your cholesterol which is effective. Statin drug can stop your liver from producing more cholesterol than you need.  

Statins block the enzyme (a type of chemical) in the liver that helps to make cholesterol. This leads to a reduction in your blood cholesterol levels. A Statin can also prevent platelets from clumping and reduce the risk of a blood clot. High doses of statin drugs may reduce some  build-up plaques in your blood vessels. The use of high doses of statin drug should be under medical supervision as it can cause serious side effects such as inflammation of the muscles, liver toxicity and may even cause kidney failure.

If you have a history of blocked heart arteries and a diabetic, taking statin drug may lower your risk for heart attack because statin drug can reduce inflammation, one of the causes of heart disease.

Statin drugs may cause various side effects in some people if taken for a long term.

How effective are statin drugs at lowering cholesterol levels?

#1. Atorvastatin (Lipitor) 10 mg taken daily can reduce LDL cholesterol 34% to 38 % in a month.
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) 20 mg taken daily can reduce LDL cholesterol 42% to 46% in a month.


#2. Simvastatin 10 mg (Zocor) taken daily can reduce bad cholesterol 26% to 33% while 20 mg taken daily can reduce up to 40% of bad cholesterol in a month.

#3. Lovastatin 10 mg reduce LDL by about 20% taken daily in a month while 20mg taken daily can reduce LDL cholesterol up to 27 % in a month.

#4. Finofibrate + Simvastatin

Finofibrate is a drug used to treat high cholesterol. This medication helps by lowering triglycerides and "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and increasing levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL). Lowering your cholesterol levels reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. It can be combined with Simvastatin for those with High Triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol levels.  Fenofibrate belongs to a class of drugs called fibrates (fibric acid derivatives). It speeds up the body's natural process of removing cholesterol. Fibrates are less effective at lowering LDL cholesterol levels, but they can lower triglycerides better  than most statins.
Recommended Dosage: Finofibrate 160 mg + Simvastatin 20 mg taken daily for three months.

Note: Do not take any medicines together with any health supplements at the same time. Check with your doctor before you use any health supplements if you are taking medicines. Drugs can interact with health supplements and some fruit juices such as grapefruit, pomegranate, grape, orange and pomelo juices. 

Statins most affected by this interaction are: Simvastatin (Zocor), Atorvastatin (Lipitor), Lovastatin (Mevacor)

Those taking the above statin drugs should avoid all these fruits which can block an enzyme that breaks down the drugs and can cause dangerous levels of these drugs to be released into the bloodstream. Grapefruit including other citrus fruits can interact with many other drugs like blood pressure medication.

Statin Drugs Side Effects.

Taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol are effective but taken for a long term may have side effects like liver toxicity, heartburn, fatigue, muscle pain, memory loss, increase your risk of diabetes (they increase insulin resistance and raising blood sugar), headache, numbness in arms, legs, fingers, toes and cramping. It can interfere with walking and exercise. It can even weaken the heart, which is the hardest working muscle in the body.  Researchers have found that people taking statin drugs for a long term are more likely to suffer from hardening of the arteries which may cause heart disease. Statin drugs cause calcified plaques to form in the coronary arteries.  People taking statins tend to have trigger fingers. Use of statins is associated with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Statins can increase the risk of trigger finger and shoulder tendinopathy, possibly through the increased MMP release and consequent weakened tendon matrix that is more susceptible to damage. It may lead to other health problems.

Can Atorvastatin Cause Tendon Problems?
Atorvastatin is one of the most commonly used antihyperlipidemic drugs.
Musculoskeletal side effects of atorvastatin include muscle pain, muscle weakness, myositis, rhabdomyolysis, tendinopathy, and spontaneous tendon rupture. Statins adversely affect tendon units.

It can also lead to decreased production of Vitamin D. Low level of Vitamin D can increase risk of cardiovascular events including hypertension, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease.

A small amount of these drugs can deplete as much as 40 % to 80 % of CoQ10 in a few weeks.

CoQ10 is very important for the function of our muscles. Low levels of CoQ10 can cause pain in muscle and weakness. CoQ10 is the most powerful anti-oxidant and prevent cholesterol from oxidation leading to heart attack!

CoQ10 stops cholesterol from blocking arteries, it can help lower blood pressure and rejuvenates heart cells and yet statins destroy it.

Statins can lower LDL cholesterol levels, but it can also lower the good cholesterol (HDL), so supplement with Fish Oil (Omega3) may be helpful if you are taking statin drug.

If you are taking statin drug at night to lower your cholesterol levels, I recommend you to take the following supplements in the morning which are helpful.

Coenzyme Q10 (50 to 200mg), Fish oil (Omega 3 - 1000mg X 3 times), Evening Primrose Oil (1000mg), Curcumin 500 mg , Vitamin D3 (400 iu to 1000 iu), Calcium with Magnesium, B-complex and Vitamin C complex (with rutin, bioflavonoid, hesperidins), and Spirulina.

Can you stop taking statins once you have started it? Do you need to take it for the rest of your life?
My own opinion is if statins caused you with serious side effects, you have to stop it. I stopped taking statins after two months of used which had caused me with muscle pain. I don’t have a history of heart attack or stroke. There is no problem for me without taking statin for many years, more than 25 years already. I have taken supplements instead of statins; however, my cholesterol levels are still higher than the normal range. My total cholesterol level is 6.2 mmol/L.

If your cholesterol is borderline high, you don't need to take statin drug to lower your cholesterol. Try the following tips which may be helpful.

Expose to Sun is important for optimal health and especially for those with high cholesterol. Get an appropriate amount of sun exposure daily without using any sunscreen.

Exercise regularly like walking, dancing, cycling and swimming.
Walking 20 to 30 minutes daily is good for older people.

1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder added to coffee or any food daily can reduce LDL cholesterol levels. 

Turmeric powder can lower LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides. Turmeric also prevents blood clot formation and prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, therefore reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. You need to eat about 1 to 3 grams daily to be effective or you can divide it into three doses. You may add 1 to 2 teaspoons of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of curry powder when you cook rice or add to any other dishes.

Curcumin is the active ingredients found in turmeric, but is about 3 % by weight from turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Black pepper can enhance absorption of curcumin. To be effective, you need to take an extract that contains high amounts of curcumin. It is a blood thinner. Stop at least a week prior to surgery. It can lower cholesterol and blood sugar. Turmeric appears to have the ability to prevent cholesterol production in the liver, block cholesterol absorption in the gut, and reduce LDL cholesterol oxidation in the lining of the arteries. Curcumin is available in capsules. Follow dose on the label.

Those taking statins to lower cholesterol may also take curcumin as a supplement and can get generally benefits from curcumin. So if you take statin drugs at night, take the curcumin in the morning after breakfast or after lunch. Statins stop cholesterol production and control certain kinds of inflammation while curcumin can prevent plaque from forming in your arteries if your cholesterol levels are high.

Warning:- Do not take curcumin if you are taking aspirin or other blood thinner medicines including medicines for diabetes and high blood pressure. Consult with your doctor before using it if you are on medication.

Puer Tea: - A Chinese study shows that pu-erh tea may help reduce bad cholesterol (also known as LDL cholesterol) and prevent obesity-related diseases.
Additionally, the health benefits of pu-erh tea include improving heart health as it contains statins that lower cholesterol levels. Drink one to two cups a day.

Black tea - 3 cups a day can reduce LDL cholesterol up to 10 % in four weeks. 

Green tea can help to lower harmful cholesterol levels and raise the good cholesterol levels. It can also help to lower blood pressure. Drink a few cups a day.

Oolong Tea:- Drink 3 cups daily can be helpful. (Do not add milk, creamer or sugar)

Rooibos Tea (Red Bush Tea) - Drink 2 cups daily can lower cholesterol levels,  blood pressure and many other health benefits.

Hibiscus Tea (Roselle) can help to reduce high blood pressure, uric acid and cholesterol

Guava Leaf Tea - Drink one cup  a day. Guava tea reduces blood pressure,  bad cholesterol & triglycerides while keeping the good cholesterol in balance, and prevent blood sugar spike.

Fruits, Vegetables and Nuts or Beans may help to lower bad cholesterol

Apple, Avacado, Dragon Fruit, grapefruit, Red grapes, guava, strawberries, pears, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, lemons, banana, papaya, and bitter gourd.

Avocado can lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while raising the HDL cholesterol. It is rich in fiber and monounsaturated fat called oleic acid.

Egg plants, Enoki Mushroom, Black fungus, Long bean, Cucumber, Kale, Radish (white lobak), broccoli, Onion, garlic, cabbage, ginger, soya bean, corn, green vegetables, pistachio nuts, almond, walnuts, peanuts, Long beans, sunflower seeds, ginger,  etc.

Almonds and Walnuts can lower total cholesterol and triglycerides in people with high cholesterol levels.

Banana peels have more fiber than banana itself.
Soluble fiber in the peel reduces the levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) or known as the bad cholesterol.

 Facts about Cooking Oils and Fats

A recent study shows that heart disease is caused by inflammation of the artery wall. Processed cooking oils which are high in omega-6 oils and with long shelf life will cause the inflammation and slowly poison everyone. We are overloaded with highly processed carbohydrates like sugar, flour and excess of omega-6 from vegetable oil like soybean, corn and sunflower oil, which are found in  processed food. Recently, researchers had also found that trans fats are found in cooking oils which are not listed on the labels.

Do not take too much Omega-6 vegetable oils (Soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, canola oil, etc.) as these oils can make the LDL lipoproteins in the body becomes oxidized.

Most vegetable oils like corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, safflower, margarine and shortening are promoted as healthy oils. Why should you avoid?

During the processing of the above oils, they can't be extracted just by pressing or extract naturally. So, chemicals (caustic soda) were used to remove the oil from the seeds.  But most of the above oils are promoted as healthy or cholesterol-free cooking oil.

Vegetables oil  contains a high level of omega-6 fatty acids (polyunsaturated fat). We need an omega-3 and omega-6 in the balance at 1:1 ratio. If we consume a higher ratio of omega-6 for a long term, it may lead to many health problems such as increasing rates of cancer, heart disease, blood clots, hypertension, strokes, heart attack and weight gain.

When high polyunsaturated vegetable oils such as sunflower, canola, corn and soybean oils are heated to high temperature during cooking or frying foods, chemical changes and oxidized cholesterol is introduced into our systems when we consume the food.

When these cooking oils are heated, especially to high temperatures, they degrade into oxidation products. More than 100 dangerous oxidation products have been found in a single piece of chicken fried in vegetable oils.

Margarine and shortening are made by adding hydrogen to the vegetable oil called hydrogenation. Hydrogenation which turns liquid fat into a solid. This process made the fat having a longer shelf-life and less greasy. Thus, Trans fat is created. It increases the small LDL cholesterol particles and lowers your "good" (HDL) cholesterol if you include it in your foods that are made with margarine and shortening. This can contribute to the buildup of plaque in your arteries. Clogged arteries greatly increase the probability of heart attack, stroke, and severe leg pain. Blood clots formed by sticky platelets and soft plaques may break free in the artery walls, which can block blood flow and cause death.

Margarine and shortening are found in cakes, crackers, cookies, white bread and  processed foods.

Non-dairy creamer is made from hydrogenated vegetable fat. It is usually made from Palm Kernel Oil. This cream is found in 3-in-1 coffee, 3-in-1 tea and other 3-in-1 drinks. Please Avoid it.

Use extra virgin olive oil (first pressing) in salad and not in frying foods because Extra Virgin Olive Oil does not have as high of a smoke point as palm oil, peanut oil, and coconut oil. Olive oil is the healthiest oil. It can raise the good cholesterol and lower the bad cholesterol.

Extra virgin olive oil is powerful antioxidants which can fight inflammation and protect the LDL particles in the blood from becoming oxidized.

Olive oil has the highest amount of monounsaturated fats. About 73% of fatty acid in the olive oil is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, which is extremely healthy. Monounsaturated fats can lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol.

Red Palm Fruit Oil (The color is orange)
It is the best choice for cooking and frying foods. Use moderately. Do not overdo on fats or oils, even the best quality ones. According to Chinese medical terminology, palm oil and coconut oil are more yin. Eating too much can detrimental to one's health.

Red palm oil contains antioxidants like carotenoids and tocotrienols, which can protect against certain types of cancer. In Malaysia, it is cheaper than olive oil or coconut oil, so is the best choice for cooking. Natural unrefined red palm oil is reddish in color due to high beta-carotene content. However, a diet high in saturated fat, possibly from too much palm oil can increase LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. Palm oil has 50 %  saturated fat and about 40 % monounsaturated fat.

Palm kernel oil may raise cholesterol due to its high saturated content. Those with high cholesterol should limit or avoid it. It is found in many processed foods. It is a common oil used in cooking and frying foods because it is cheaper than other oils. Palm kernel oil increases LDL cholesterol when compared with other vegetable oils low in saturated fat. Palm kernel oil has 86 %  saturated fat and about 12 %  monounsaturated fat. 

Coconut oil is different from other oils and consists of medium-chain fatty acids, which are metabolized differently than other fats. They can reduce appetite, increase fat burning and provide numerous health benefits. Eat a small amount of coconut oil daily showed an increased level of HDL and decreased LDL/HDL ratio.

Coconut oil also contents lauric acid and is a natural infection fighter. It also contains MCT or medium chain triglycerides, which can assist energy production in some diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

Coconut oil contains high concentrations of saturated fats, but not harmful as other oils. Coconut oil may raise the LDL cholesterol if consumed in high amount daily, but the particles and the size of the LDL are of the bigger type which is less likely to promote heart disease.

Coconut oil is stable and does not produce harmful chemicals when heated.

When frying food, sunflower, canola, soya bean oil, corn oil are the worst oils because they are not suitable for deep frying due to low smoking point .

Ghee:- derived from grass-fed cows is best cooking oil.

It is rich in Vitamins A, D, E, K. It is a safe and protective fat fit for human consumption with many health benefits. It raises (HDL) cholesterol levels and lowers the bad (LDL) cholesterol. Ghee also reduces inflammation and prevents heart disease. Ghee is good for stir-fry food. It cooks at a higher point than any other fats. Ghee has 65 % saturated fat, 25 % monounsaturated fat and 5 % polyunsaturated fat.

Lard can be used for cooking too. It has about 40 % of saturated fat, 10 % polyunsaturated fat, about 50 %  monounsaturated fat and 25% palmitic acid. It contains high amounts of Vitamin D which aids in the absorption of calcium. It is actually not being as bad for your health. Eat moderately if you want to use lard for cooking. Remember that our ancestors had eaten lard for many years and they didn’t die at a young age. 

Note: - Palmitic acid is a saturated fat, which is thought to increase cholesterol and the risk of heart diseases, however, it does not raise cholesterol if it is combined with the linoleic acid (polyunsaturated fat) which is found in olive oil, palm oil, ghee and coconut oil. Eat moderately is healthy as palmitic acid has antioxidant properties.

Peanut oil is commonly used in cooking. It has about 20% saturated fat, 50%  monounsaturated fat and about 30% polyunsaturated fat.  It has good smoking point and can be used to stir-fry Asian cuisine. A spoon of the oil has 14 grams of fat -Saturated fat (2.3gms), Monounsaturated fat (6.2 gms), Polyunsaturated fat (4.3 gms), Phytosterols (27.9 mg) and Vitamin E. This oil contains phytochemicals and vitamin E, which are natural antioxidants and help reduce inflammatory problem like arthritis. 

Peanut oil also contains high amount of linoleic acid (a type of omega-6 fatty acid) which can cause inflammation and have been known to cause various health problems if taking too much. Linoleic acid is an essential omega-6 fatty acid that’s required in small amounts, however excessive linoleic acid intake is associated with inflammation, obesity, heart disease, and more.

Sesame oil, mustard oil and olive oil are healthy oil recommended for dressing foods and not for frying foods due to low smoke point.

Note:- Do not eat more than 20% fats or oils in your diet. We can eat about 30 grams of oil daily and not more than that. Fats should be eaten in the raw state if possible and not overcooked like deep frying. Those with high cholesterol should not eat  deep fried foods .

Chemicals called phytosterols, which can block the intestine from absorbing cholesterol and thus reducing the LDL cholesterol in the blood. They are found in palm oil, peanut oil, corn oil, canola oil and olive oil. 

There are many other types of edible oil such as sesame oil, peanut oil, walnut oil, Avocado oil, Flax seed oil, etc.  Each type has its own health benefits but do not consume too much as they are high in calories.

It would be wise to use alternately different cooking oils in your cooking, like Red palm oil, peanut oil, Ghee, lard, virgin coconut oil and virgin olive oil so that you get all the health benefits from the oils. Always cook your food with any cooking oil over a low flame so the food is never overheated and cooking food on high heat can create a chemical called acrylamide, which can cause cancer. Fried foods also produce compounds called advanced glycation end products, also known as AGEs, in the body. These compounds cause inflammation in the body.

According to Chinese medical terminology, all vegetable oils are yin. Eating too much of the oil can detrimental to one's health. 

Store cooking oil in a cupboard. Do not expose to high heat or sunlight.

There are two common types of cooking oil made from palm fruits. (Red Palm Fruit oil and  Palm Kernel oil)

Oil from Red Palm Fruit contains oleic acids (omega-9) and 50% saturated fat and about 40% monounsaturated fat. It also contains beta-carotene (antioxidants nutrients) and Vitamin E. This is miracle fruit oil and best  for cooking.

Palm Kernel oil contains more than 80% saturated fat and 12% monounsaturated fat.

Can a person with high cholesterol eat some eggs and seafood?  

Yes, eat one egg a day or 3 to 4 eggs per week will not raise cholesterol level in most people, however cholesterol levels will go up slightly in some people who are hyper responders. Eggs are harmless. Do not throw away the yolk because yolk contains most of the nutrients in an egg. Egg yolks do not caused heart disease. They are good for the heart. Eggs can change the LDL particles from small and dense LDL to Large LDL particles which are harmless. Eggs can even lower blood glucose levels and less likely to develop type 2 diabetes for those who eat 4 eggs per week. Eat soft boiled eggs and not scramble eggs. Choose pure kampong eggs.

Do Eggs Cause Inflammation?
Eating too many eggs can lead to increased swelling and joint pain. Egg yolks contain arachidonic acid, which may trigger inflammation in the body. 

Dietary cholesterol such as from kidney, shrimp, crab, egg, liver,seafood and prawns are higher in cholesterol than other foods, but has much less of an effect on the level of cholesterol in your blood than the amount of saturated fat and trans fat you eat.

Prawns itself will not raise your cholesterol when you eat moderately as the cholesterol from the prawns are broken down by your body  unless you deep fried the prawns with oil. Prawns are low in saturated fat and contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Foods high in cholesterol actually don’t raise the cholesterol unless you are eating them as part of a diet too high in calories and lacking in fiber.
Can Health Supplements Lower Your  Cholesterol Levels?

The common causes of high cholesterol levels are due to eating unhealthy diet which consists of high fats diet especially from hydrogenated oil, sugar and processed foods (high in sodium & trans fat). Saturated fat, sugar and sodium are three major nutrients that, in excess, can cause harm to our heart. 

In order to lower your cholesterol, you have to change your diet.

Taking health supplements can lower cholesterol without side effects like statins, but may not be effective for some people.
