High blood pressure is also commonly known as hypertension. It is a common disease in which the blood flows through the blood vessels at higher than normal pressure.

If you have hypertension, you may have one or more of the common symptoms/signs such as a headache for several days, lightheadedness, dizziness, tiredness, feeling unwell, blurred vision or double vision, discomfort in the stomach with the urge to vomit, nose bleeding, blood in urine, tingling in the feet and hands, shoulder pain, red eyes, red face, and irregular heartbeats.

High Blood Pressure is sometimes called a silent killer because there may be no symptom even your blood pressure is high. It is necessary to check your blood pressure regularly even you are young.

What Causes High Blood Pressure?

# 1. One of the common causes of high blood pressure is the narrowing and hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis, which is caused by an artery plaque buildup. The blood cannot flow smoothly through the narrowed or hardened arteries causing the heart to work harder in order to pump the blood through the system and causing the blood pressure to rise.

As we age, fatty deposits develop in the walls of the arteries and gradually they build up, forming lumps and reducing the ease of blood flow through the arteries. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium, debris, and fat found sticking to the walls of the blood vessels. Over time, the plaques became hardened and narrowed the arteries, which reduced blood flow. Plaque can also trap blood clots and completely block the arteries, causing serious problems such as stroke and heart attack. Most heart attacks are caused by the blockage of the coronary arteries.

# 2. Smoking and high cholesterol levels can cause blood arteries becoming less elastic.

# 3. High blood pressure can also be caused by an underlying condition such as kidney disease, diabetes, certain defects in blood vessels, thyroid problems and hormone problems.

#4. Protein surplus can narrow the capillary vessels and thicken the blood.

# 11. Some women with normal blood pressure in their early years may develop hypertension after menopause due to estrogen levels drop and blood vessels become stiff or less elastic.

# 12. Electromagnetic radiation from computers, cell phones, electric appliances, wifi can cause stress to your body and we know that stress can cause high blood pressure. Another type of stress is called psychological stress or caused by over-busy life can certainly raise the blood pressure.

# 13. Certain medicines such as birth control pills, cold remedies, antidepressants, pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, caffeine, and certain health supplements may raise blood pressure to unexpected high.
Note:- Vitamin E may raise blood pressure to dangerous levels when you first take the supplement in large doses. Always take health supplements in low doses and increase your daily dose on a weekly basis rather than taking the maximum dose immediately. 
MSM and Glucosamine sulfate may raise the blood pressure, especially with older people. On the safe side, use Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCL) to treat arthritis if you have high blood pressure.
Certain Herbs may raise blood pressure:- Liquorice, St. John’s Wort, Rosemary, Feverfew, Ginseng, Ephedra, and Senna.

# 14. Both air pollution and noise pollution (especially traffic) can increase the risk of high blood pressure.

#15. Eat too much salty food, fried foods, greasy foods, food with added monosodium glutamate (MSG) and processed foods, which are high in trans fat, sugar, salt, additives can raise blood pressure to unexpected high in the long term. MSG can also cause dizziness if taken too much. 
The salt intake should be 3.5 grams to 5 grams per day depending on body weight. Above 8 grams of salt daily may cause high blood pressure in some people. 1 teaspoon of salt is about 5.5 grams. A high-sodium diet can prevent you from lowering your blood pressure even you are on medication.
Those people with very high blood pressure and dialysis should use very little salt. Eating too much salty food daily can also contribute to the formation of kidney stones, arthritis, gout, sticky blood, and hypertension.

If you have high blood pressure, you will need to control it for life, such as making lifestyle changes, eating healthy foods, exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. Avoid all the foods that can cause high blood pressure. In some cases, you may need to take prescribed medicines if all the health supplements mentioned here failed to lower your blood pressure to normal levels.

Ideal blood pressure should be 90 to 120 (top number) and 60 to 80 (bottom number).

If your top number is 140 or higher, you have high blood pressure regardless of your bottom number. If your bottom number is 90 or higher you are also having high blood pressure, regardless of your top number.

Isolated Systolic Hypertension is found so typically in the elderly, due to arterial stiffness when there is an increase in systolic blood pressure (top number) above 150 and a decrease in diastolic blood pressure (lower number)  less than 80. If there is a big gap between the top number (systolic) and the lower number (diastolic) of more than 60 points apart, there is a cause for concern. For example, if the top number is 159 and the lower number is 68 (159 – 68 = 91 points). This new number is known as PULSE PRESSURE and can be more important than blood pressure itself. 

Wide Pulse Pressure
(above 60 points) indicates that the patient is a sensitive marker of the narrowing of the carotid arteries or the arteries are covered with fatty deposits which increase the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, and sudden death.

Another possible reason can be a leaky heart valve which can cause shortness of breath, weakening of the heart and finally heart failure. A leaky heart valve is when the blood flow through the heart fluctuates irregularly as the valve does not close properly and allows the blood to leak backward. 
 
Take 1-5 mg daily of folic acid may help to reduce the stiffness of the arteries and prevent isolated systolic hypertension. Other helpful supplements include Coenzyme Q10 50 mg, Vitamin E 200 IU, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, *Devil's Claw 500 mg - 2 capsules X 2 times/day, hibiscus tea, hawthorn, garlic, beet-root capsules, Krill oil, Black tea, Nattokinase, Amla fruit extract, Artichoke, etc.

Resistant Hypertension: - High blood pressure is usually caused by the hardening and stiffening of the arteries. But, if your blood pressure is still high after taking blood pressure-lowering medications, you need to check with your healthcare specialist or a cardiologist. Possible causes are hidden causes such as some blood vessels are clogged, especially in the blood vessels that nourish the kidneys, snoring known as obstructive sleep apnea, Autonomic Neuropathy (damage to the nerves), and taking certain drugs, herbs or salty foods that can boost blood pressure. It can be a secondary cause elsewhere in the body.

How do you know if some of your blood arteries are blocked or narrowed? Check your blood pressure on both arms. The best time to check the blood pressure is from 6 am to 10 am.

A difference of 15 millimeters (or more) of mercury (mm Hg) for systolic pressure (top number) or more than 10 mm Hg for diastolic pressure (bottom number) may be a sign of the narrowing of the blood arteries.

For Example, if your left arm measured 148/90 and your right arm measured 130/75, 148-130 = 18 mm Hg, so the top number has a difference of 18 mm Hg and the lower numbers 90 minus 75 have a difference of 15 mm Hg.

If the difference of 10 to 15 mm Hg shows up repeatedly is a risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Check your blood pressure daily at the same time.

Systolic blood pressure is when the heart is contracting while diastolic pressure refers to the heart is in a period of relaxation and expansion.

Your doctor might tell you a different story about your blood pressure. For example, if your Systolic blood pressure (top number) is 150 or higher and the diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) is 75 or less, he might tell you that you have nothing to worry about unless your bottom number is above 90. It is common in older people due to arterial stiffness and it is called isolated systolic hypertension which may give a greater risk of coronary artery disease, stroke or heart attack, dementia, chronic kidney disease, and probably diabetes if left untreated.

For those above the age of 60, the blood pressure may be higher and some as high as 150 (Systolic mm Hg) and 90 Diastolic mm Hg without health problems. However, some people with pre-hypertension of 140/90 have symptoms such as lightheadedness and dizziness. In that case, you may need to take medicine to lower your blood pressure.

Those people 60 or older should only take blood pressure medication if their blood pressure exceeds 150/90. The elderly may need higher blood pressure to stave off brain aging and prevent dementia.

Common Types of Blood Pressure Medications:-

ACE inhibitors, a Calcium-channel blocker, Alpha blockers, Peripheral adrenergic inhibitors, Alpha-2 Receptor Agonist, Diuretics, Beta-blockers, etc.

There are many types of high blood pressure medicines to choose from. Each type works in a variety of ways to lower blood pressure. Medicines for hypertension only treat the symptoms and not the root cause, so they cannot cure your high blood pressure problem. You need to take the medicine to control your blood pressure for the rest of your life. If you stop the treatment, you are at risk for related health problems. Take your medicine at the same time daily so that you will not forget it.

Warning:- Do not eat pomelo, grapefruit, grapes, bananas, and pomegranate just after taking high blood pressure medicines.  Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice can affect some medicines. Choosing high blood pressure medicines depends on the general health of the patients and whether or not they have any medical issues or drug sensitivities.

Drugs (medicines for hypertension) are dangerous. Drugs can damage your eyes. Some may cause stomach problems and headaches. They might even cause dizziness, constipation, tiredness, cough, leg cramps, insomnia,  depression, and many other side effects to worry about.

High Blood Pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other health problems. Untreated high blood pressure over a long period of time can weaken blood vessel walls and cause brain hemorrhages (bleeding in the brain).

What causes arterial plaque and hardening of the blood vessels?

Natural Spring Water: - Drinking this water for a few months can help to lower blood pressure because the water is a good solvent that breaks up the cholesterol in the blood vessels. It can also neutralize toxins in your body.

Ginger Tea: - 2 " Fresh ginger (Pound or grated), add a ½ cup of water. Mix with a  ½ teaspoon of Honey. Squeeze ½ a lemon juice. Mix well and drink the juice mixture daily before bed.

Method #2. 
2” piece of fresh ginger root. Slice the ginger thinly. Combine ginger with 2 cups of water in a small saucepan. Boil in  medium heat and simmer for about 15 - 20 minutes or until light brownish color. Add honey to taste.

Take 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mix with a glass of water in the morning before breakfast can help to lower blood pressure. Apple cider vinegar is also available in capsules.

Drink a cup of star fruit juice on empty stomach daily can help to lower blood pressure effectively.

Lemongrass Tea: 4 stalks of lemongrass, cut into 3-inch long (smash the hard parts) and one green apple (quartered).  Boil 900 ML of water in a saucepan, reduce the heat to low, add the lemongrass and apple,  simmer for 15 minutes. Papaya Leaf Tea:- Take one large piece of fresh papaya leaf. Cut the leaf into small pieces. Put them in a cooking pot, add 3 cups of water to boil and simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes. When cool,  drink a cup can help to lower blood pressure. Add a spoon of honey for better taste. Papaya leaf tea is very bitter. Papaya leaf tea is also available in a tea bag. 
Note:- Eat some ripe papaya can also lower your risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease due to high in Vitamin C and potassium.
However, eating too much papaya might upset your stomach such as bloating, stomach ache and abdominal cramps.
Fruits are high in fiber, water, and sugar.  Eating whole fruit takes a while to digest and the fructose goes to the liver slowly and will not cause any harm. The fiber in fruits can reduce cholesterol and get rid of constipation.

If you drink a bottle of soda or any sugary foods with added sugar or fructose, the fructose goes to your liver very fast in large amounts that can have disastrous consequences. It can increase the heart rate and raise blood pressure.

Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from Japanese food natto which can help to normalize blood pressure, prevent heart attack and stroke. It can help to keep the blood vessels clean.  Reduce the intake of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil to 1000mg a day if you take nattokinase as both can make blood less sticky and less likely to form clots.

  2. good list but in my battle with blood pressure i tried everything,Body react positive maybe first 2 days but after numbers rising again.I have very bad effects for any medicine,so i do self treatment with ACE inhibitor Captoplil,just 1/4 of recommended dose and it keep me in control

  3. Thank you for your sharing. Health supplements react to each person differently. Sometimes, you need to take for a longer period to see the effect. For me, I drink a cup of Misai Kucing Tea and take some garlic capsules. My blood pressure is normal now. However, drug for hypertension is very effective to lower blood pressure.
