Clean Water For Good Health: The tap water is normally clear, but sometimes it may appear discolored or contain particles due to old corroded water pipes, and other contaminants. As we know that tap water from lakes or streams is polluted from various contaminants such as chemicals, animal waste, fertilizes, pesticides, micro plastics, heavy metals and rubbish. The treatment plants may have removed some contaminants, but to some limits. Drinking tap water may cause water-borne diseases due to pipe rust, harmful contaminants, chlorine, viruses, etc. It is essential for us to drink clean water. To solve this problem, use a water filter can help you to improve the quality of drinking water. There are different types of water filters and the three most common water filters are Polypropylene (PP) Sediment filters, Carbon block filters and Ceramic filters. The ceramic filter is more expensive and requires more maintenance than the carbon filter. Water filters are rated at 20 microns, 10 microns, 5 microns and, 1 micron. The smaller the pore size, the cleaner the filtered water, but is more susceptible to clogging. A micron rated in the filter means that all particles larger than that will be trapped by the filter. Technology now allows filtering membranes to remove the virus down to 0.0001 microns without a chemical or electro treatment. Choosing a water filter depending on the quality of the water. If your tap water is clean and you just want to remove chlorine, chemicals, and odor, use a single water filter such as a Panasonic water filter or Nitrolux single water filter is good enough. Another good choice is to use a two-stage water filter such as the Pensonic two-stage water filter. The Pensonic water filter is using a 5-micron Polypropylene filter as the first stage filter and a 5-micron carbon block filter for the second stage. You still need to boil the water before drinking as these water filters do not remove viruses/bacteria. The purpose of using a PP sediment filter as the first stage filter is to remove sediments and protect the carbon filter which is more expensive than the PP sediment filter in the two-stage or three-stage water filter system. PP filter can remove rust and sediments better than the carbon filter. In a typical three-stage water filter system, the first stage is using a PP sediment filter of 5-micron, the second stage is a 5-micron carbon block filter and the third stage can be a smaller micron filter such as a ceramic filter. Some types of 3-stage water filter system is using a PP sediment filter as the first stage and two types of carbon filters as the second and third stage filter. Polypropylene (PP) Water filter cartridges for sediment removal are rated in microns usually from 20-micron down to 1-micron and used as the first stage filter to remove sand, silt, dirt and rust particles. They are made from a variety of materials such as wound string and polypropylene. Both types work well for removing dirt, sediment and rust. The PP filter cannot remove cysts, bacteria or viruses and chemicals (chlorine). Carbon block filters are from 5-micron down to 0.5-micron size and can be used as a second stage filter. A 0.5-micron carbon filter or smaller may remove some bacteria and cysts as bacteria is range in the size from 0.2 to 2 microns. There are two types of carbon filters, such as Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and Carbon Block Filters. Although both are effective, carbon block filters generally have a higher contaminant removal ratio. Activated carbon filter can remove many volatile organic chemicals (VOC), pesticides and herbicides, as well as chlorine, benzene, trihalomethane (THM) compounds, radon, solvents, and hundreds of chemicals found in tap water. However, it cannot completely removed at dissolved contaminants such as fluoride and other metals. To remove these contaminants, you need to use a reverse osmosis water filter system such as Aqua Kent 5-Stage RO Water Filtration System. The ceramic filter ranges from 0.2~0.5 micron hole diameter. Ceramic Filter can remove bacteria, silt, and suspension in water, cystobacter, pathogen, and worms. If the water is dirty, the ceramic filter can clog easily and need cleaning regularly. To overcome flow rate problems, a low micron-rating ceramic filter must have larger element pre-filter to prevent larger particles, which can clog the low micron-rating filter such as using a sediment pre-filter of 5-micron as the first stage filter and 1-micron carbon block filter as a second stage filter while the ceramic filter as the last stage filter. The disadvantage of ceramic filter is that it needs a higher water pressure than a carbon filter. When comparing a ceramic filter with a carbon filter, its flow rate is much lower. Some types of ceramic filters contain activated carbon block inserts to remove organic compounds and chlorine. Some types of water filter systems are using the ceramic filter as pre-filter, but need cleaning regularly. A Ceramic filter can be cleaned and prolonged the service life and save replacement costs.  However, it does not remove chemicals like chlorine and other chemical contaminants, so you need to combine with a carbon block filter. It cannot remove a virus/bacteria. You need to boil the water before drinking especially water from a well or pond. A popular form of water filtration is Reverse Osmosis (RO) such as Elken Bio Pure K-200 which uses a 5-stage Reverse Osmosis purification system to remove all types of contaminants including bacteria and viruses. The purification system uses a pre-sediment filter of 5-micron size as the first stage and a 1-micron sediment filter as a second stage filter to remove contaminants down to 1 micron. The third stage is using a granular activated carbon filter to remove chlorine, pesticides, and herbicides. The fourth stage is using a type of membrane to remove any remaining contaminants including bacteria and viruses down to 0.0001 microns. The last stage is using an organic granular activated carbon filter to improve the taste. When to Change your Water Filter Cartridge?  Filter cartilage replacement depends on the quality of your tap water. For example, in an area with lots of contaminants in the water, the filter won’t last long. You may need to replace the first stage PP water filter in one to two months and about six months for the carbon block filter. Recommended Cheap Water Filters in Malaysia: Panasonic water filter TK-CS10 is using activated carbon and non-woven fabric: The non­-woven fabric provides exceptional filtration performance to remove coarse particles of dirt. The activated carbon, which has an outstanding self­-cleansing effect, absorbs harmful substances such as red rust and mold.  Use this filter with caution: A high water pressure can damage a water filter which may burst or crack due to increased water pressure. The water pressure setting to 40kPa - 350kPa (6 PSI - 50 PSI) is recommended for Panasonic water filter. Do not run hot water through this water purifier that may cause heat warping, malfunctions and the hose or housing to burst. Pensonic PP-123 water filter is a 2-stage water filter using 5-micron Polypropylene filter in the first stage which is effective in removing sediment and the other particulate matter like dirt, silt and rust and also protects the Carbon filter. The second stage is a 5-micron Carbon Filter with activated carbon to remove chlorine and/or chloramines. The first stage PP filter is good at blocking sediments without a blockage. The PP filter is very cheap and need to be replaced after one to two months of use. When comparing water flow rate with Panasonic water filter, its flow rate is much higher. You can combine this filter with another single ceramic water filter to have very clean water. See Picture #2. NITROLUX  DWF-268 DOUBLE WATER FILTER is another good 2-stage water filter similar to Pensonic water filter, but it uses a 1-micron carbon filter which  is effective in chlorine reduction and provides excellent drinking water. Clean water is essential for health and necessary to sustain life. Many common health problems can be avoided if we simply drink plenty of clean water.   Clean water can also help to eliminate excess buildup of cholesterol waste from the body. A good water filter can be very expensive and not many people can afford to install one at home. I can afford to buy cheap water filter such as a Panasonic water purifier. It can remove chlorine, unpleasant odor & dirt. I used this water filter for many years. The only problem with the water filter cartridge is that it needs to be changed very often if the tap water is dirty. The tap water in my area is dirty due to pipe rust and other contaminants. I installed a Panasonic Water Purifier TK-CS10. The filter cartridge cannot last long as the dirty water clogged up the filter after about a month. The cartridge cannot be washed and need a replacement. The Panasonic water filter cartridge is more expensive compared to other brands replacement filters like PENSONIC or NITROLUX. To solve the clogging problem, I combined Pensonic water filter with Panasonic water filter as shown in the picture #3. With a combination of the two water filters, the problem of clogging in the Panasonic water filter is no longer a problem. With this combination, the Panasonic water filter cartridge can last longer and save replacement cost. Onward Ecotech 10 Inch 3 Stages Water Filter is another cheap 10 inch stainless steel countertop residential water filter system made of plastic or stainless steel, which is suitable for household, hotel and restaurant use. From 1 stage to 3 stages fits most 10 inch standard sized filter cartridges. You can choose proper filter cartridge according to local water quality. Proper filter cartridge can remove odor, smell, color and even organic chemicals from tap water. The water filter comes with a quick-easy diverter valve to install the filter without extra fittings. Stage 1: PP (5micron) removes the sand, mud, sediment, rust, and other particles. Stage 2: UDF (granular activated carbon) absorbs chlorine, color, organic contaminants and bad tastes. Stage 3: CTO (compression activated carbon) completely absorbs chlorine, color, organic contaminants and bad tastes. Water Filters – How to Choose the right one? Water filters are available in a single carbon filter, two-stage water filter, 3-stage water filter, and the more expensive 5-stage RO water filter system. If your city water is clean, choose a single carbon filter in order to remove the chlorine and other chemicals is good enough. Another good choice is a 2-stage water filter which can effectively remove sediment and chlorine. In an area with rusty old pipe, you may want a 3-stage water filter. With this filter, you can replace the last stage with a ceramic filter which has a smaller micron than a carbon filter. For example: 1st stage a 5-micron PP filter, 2nd stage a 5-micron carbon block filter, and the 3rd stage a ceramic filter. D.I.Y. A 3-Stage Water Filter System. To prevent any of these carbon filters leaking contaminants to the water, you may combine the two-stage water filter with a ceramic filter as follow. #1. Use this ceramic filter to build a 3-stage water filter. #2. A combintion of Pensonic water filter with a single ceramic water filter. D.I.Y. 3-Stage Water Filter System A. You can combine a Pensonic two-stage water filter with a single water filter to make a 3-stage water filter.  The 1st stage is using a 5-micron PP filter, the 2nd stage is a 5-micron carbon block filter, and the 3rd stage is using a Ceramic filter (Pic#1). The water flow rate is low, but the water is much cleaner than using carbon filter alone. #3. A combination of Pensonic Two-stage water filter with Panasonic water filter. D.I.Y. 3-Stage Water Filter System B A combination of Pensonic 2-stage water filter with Panasonic water filter to make a 3-stage water filter, which provides clean water. #4. A combination of two sets of 2-stage water filters to make a 4-stage water filter D.I.Y. 4-Stage Water Filter: This is a combination of two sets of 2-stage water filter. The first stage filter is a 5-micron PP filter, the 2nd-stage is another 5-micron PP filter, the 3rd stage with 1-micron PP filter and the 4th stage with 1-micron carbon block filter. This combination gives excellent clean water.  This combination  of  water  filters  is  good  for  dirty  tap water.

Note: You can also use 5-micron Carbon filter in the first stage, 5-micron PP filter in the second stage, 5-micron PP filter in the third stage and 1-micron PP filter in the fourth stage to give excellent filtered water.
