What is SLE?

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or Lupus is a dangerous chronic inflammatory disease that can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs. An autoimmune disease occurs when the body's tissues are attacked by its own immune system. It is a disease of unknown cause where the patient’s body makes large quantities of blood proteins called antibodies that react against the person’s own tissues. There is another type of lupus disease which is known as Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) which attacks only the skin and is less dangerous than SLE. Lupus erythematosus erythema has different types, there are butterfly-shaped erythema, discoid erythema, edematous erythema, annular erythema, erythema multiforme; rash, red rash, pimples, blue spots, pigmentation spots, pigmentation, etc. The initial signs and symptoms vary from person to person such as fatigue, mild fever, skin rashes, muscle aches, mouth ulcers, headaches, pain in the abdominal area, heartburn, weight loss, swelling, and joint pain. Other common signs and symptoms include muscle soreness, lymph nodes, loss of appetite, hypothermia, hair loss, nausea and vomiting, sciatica, nose bleeds, swollen legs and so on. SLE can affect many different body systems such as the heart (SLE heart disease), vasculitis (inflamed blood vessel), pericardial hydrocephalus, and coronary artery disease, and violations of the lungs (lung inflammation). It has various symptoms, such as a cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath. Some patients will have pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, pleural inflammation, and pulmonary hemorrhage. Acute or chronic renal impairment may develop with lupus nephritis, leading to acute or end-stage kidney failure. SLE is a life-threatening disease and your doctor might tell you that there is no cure for your SLE as it is an autoimmune disease. The common treatments are anti-inflammation medications for joint pain, steroid cream for rashes and certain drugs to minimize the immune response.   The doctor may prescribe Plaquenil or other drugs to treat symptoms of SLE and arthritis. Petechiae

What is petechia? A petechia is a small red or purple spot on the skin caused by broken capillary blood vessels.
